What does isotonic mean?
An isotonic gel is formulated at a similar concentration to the body's own fluids. SiS explains that this lets the gel leave the stomach quickly without drawing in extra fluid to dilute it, which is why GO Isotonic is designed to be taken without water. The trade-off is volume: at 60ml, it is larger than many concentrated gels that provide a similar amount of carbohydrate.
SiS describes GO Isotonic as the world's first isotonic energy gel, and it won the Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2015.
When to use
GO Isotonic is intended for use during training and racing as part of a fuelling plan. SiS suggests 1 to 3 or more gels per hour, depending on your sport and event, to work toward 60–90g of carbohydrate per hour. Three gels provide 66g.
Tear the top off the sachet and squeeze the gel into your mouth as needed. Practise your fuelling plan in training before race day, as individual tolerance varies.
Each gel contains only a trace of salt (0.01g), so it is not a hydration or electrolyte product. In hot, humid conditions, plan fluids and electrolytes separately, for example with SiS GO Hydro Tablets.
